You have questions? Concerns? You’ve come to the right place. This is your all-inclusive information page designed to put your mind at ease.
When your student heads off for college, he or she will have many new experiences awaiting them in the collegiate environment. We know that you’ll have questions such as: Will my student be safe? What will this education cost? What if my son or daughter needs assistance inside or outside the classroom?
At Longwood, we understand your concerns. We have compiled this guide to answer most of the questions you may have before you send your loved one to college. Also, at any time, feel free to contact us in the admissions office with any other questions you may have.
Will my student be safe at Longwood?
Safety is our highest priority. Our campus is located in a secure environment and University Police actively patrol the campus 24 hours a day. Our residence halls are equipped with a 24-hour card-access system and alarmed exterior doors. Students only have access to the building in which they reside. All visitors wishing to enter a residence hall must be escorted by a resident. We also help students understand risks in order to help them learn to make good decisions. Programs such as self-defense classes and the Night Walkers organization reinforce the commitment to overall safety and well-being of the student body. Additional information may be found in the Frequently Asked Question section of www.longwood.edu/rcl/.
What if my student needs academic help or some form of counseling?
In a perfect world, everyone would be self sufficient and no one would ever need help. This, as we all know, is not a perfect world. Many situations in life require some sort of assistance. Whether it is in the academic or social realm, we have all been there. When that help requires more than a conversation with a roommate or a phone call home to Mom and Dad, staff in the Counseling Center (visit the Counceling Center web site) and the Academic Support Center (visit the Academic Support Center web site) is there to help.
Tell me about your Career Center services.
Longwood’s Career Center is a full-service office dedicated to helping students in their many different phases of career preparation. Our staff of professionals is trained to work with students in the midst of many decisions: What will I major in? Where should I do my internship? What kinds of careers are available to particular majors? How do I prepare for an interview? Click here for more information or visit the Career Center web site.
How can I have access to my student's records?
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act
If you want access to your student's records, instruct them to print and fill out this form. If they do not complete and submit this form, we cannot release information protected by the above mentioned acts to any one other than the student. We will not be able to discuss any information with parent(s)/guardian(s)/spouse until this form is completed and submitted.
Are there medical services on campus if my student gets sick or has chronic health needs?
The Student Health Center offers a friendly environment for educational purposes as well as treatment for illness and injury. Our registered nurses will take good care of your prized possessions here at Longwood. If an appointment with the doctor is necessary, the nurse can schedule that appointment for you. We also offer periodic immunization shots and educational workshops to help students stay healthy while they are here. There is also an available on-campus rescue squad called the First Responders; and, if your student is in need of more serious medical care, Southside Hospital is less than a mile from campus. For more information, visit the Student Health and Wellness Center web site.
Can my son or daughter bring a car to campus?
First year students are not permitted to bring a vehicle to campus. For the most part, the social life of the student body is on-campus, so there are few reasons to need a car. There is a ride board in the Student Union that helps students identify others with whom they could share rides home for holidays and breaks. Also, public transportation is available to students throughout the year. (Note: Out-of-state students may ask for exceptions.)
What is the cost?
For the academic year 2005-2006, our total in-state charges will be:
$13,650 (for students enrolled in 30 credits and on the 14 plus $150 meal plan.)
For the academic year 2006-2007, our total out-of-state charges for tuition, room, board and fees is:
$21,320 (for students enrolled in 30 credits and on the 14 plus $150 meal plan.)
